The higher education institutions will publish the admission results of the spring joint application by June 30. You will receive a letter with the admission result when all the results have been published. The letter includes the admission results of all the study programmes you have applied to.

In joint application to higher education, the applicant is usually offered only one student place. After all the admission results have been published, there may, however, be situations where the applicant can choose which offer of admission they wish to accept.

***

Example:

In June you have been accepted to your second choice study programme, but you cannot accept the offered place yet, because the results of your first choice programme are still unfinished. When all the results have been published, your situation in the admission process is the following: you have been placed on a waiting list for your first choice programme and you have been accepted to your second choice programme.  You can either accept the offer from your second choice programme or, if you gain admission to your first choice programme, you can choose which offer of admission you wish to accept.

***

A study place can be offered and accepted in several different ways. The higher education institution can accept you as a student unconditionally or conditionally. As an applicant, you can accept the offered study place bindingly or accept the study place and remain on the waiting list for your higher preferences.

You may receive a different result for different programmes:

  • Student admission process unfinished
  • Accepted
  • Accepted (a condition set by the higher education institution)
  • Accepted (waiting for results from your higher preferences)
  • On a reserve place
  • Cancelled
  • You have not received a study place

Accepted

If you have been accepted to a higher education institution where you know you want to study or you know that you will not be accepted to any of your higher preferences, confirm the study place by following the instructions.

If you have been accepted to a higher education institution but you want to wait for the results of a higher preference, you can confirm the study place but remain on a waiting list for higher preferences.

If you are accepted to a study place, and are on a waiting list for a higher preference:

  • You can confirm the study place, but choose to remain on the waiting list for another study place.
  • If you are not accepted to a study place you are waiting for, this confirmation remains valid.
  • If you are accepted to a study place you are waiting for, you do not need to confirm that study place. It will be automatically confirmed.

Binding acceptance of a study place cannot be altered or cancelled. Binding acceptance of a study place also cancels all the other study places you have applied to.

Accepted (with a condition set by the higher education institution)

If you have been accepted to a study place conditionally, it means that your application is pending, but not failed or cancelled. You have a study place in this higher education institution, but there is a condition for you to be accepted and the higher education institution will cancel the admission, if you do not meet the admission criteria in the end. For example: your previous degree is not yet complete or you have not been able to state your final results during the application period. So you need to send the necessary documents to the higher education institution by the given date in order to confirm this study place finally.

What you need to do: Confirm the study place according to the instructions and send both the confirmation form of acceptance and necessary documents to the higher education institution. Binding acceptance of a study place cannot be altered or cancelled. Binding acceptance of a study place also cancels all the other study places you have applied to. You can register for studies after the higher education institution has confirmed your admission.

Accepted (waiting for results from your higher preferences)

You cannot accept a study place with lower preference before all of the results have been published, even if you have been admitted, if the results of your higher preferences are still incomplete. If you are admitted to a study programme with higher preference before June 30, 2017, this study option will be cancelled, and you cannot accept the study place. If you are not admitted to a study programme with higher preference before June 30, 2017, you can accept this study place.

Waiting list

If you are on the waiting list, you will receive a study place from this higher education institution if the applicants before you in the queue do not confirm the study place. If you are on the waiting list for a higher preference and are accepted to a lower preference study place, you can confirm the study place but still remain on the waiting list for higher preferences.

Information on admission results

The higher education institutions will announce the results of the spring joint application by 30 June. You will receive a letter informing you about the admission results of all study programmes you have applied to.

If you have access to the My Studyinfo -service, you will be able to access your admission letter and  your own admission data there.

You can also be notified of the results before 30 June if

  • you have been accepted to your highest preference,
  • you have been accepted to one of your lower preferences and cannot be accepted to higher preferences
  • you have been accepted to a lower preference but the results of your higher preferences are still unfinished
  • you are on the waiting list or will not get a study place

Confirming a study place

When you have been accepted as a student, you will be notified. After this you still need to confirm the study place according to the instructions by the given date or you will lose your place.

  • If you are offered a study place in the joint application of spring 2017 by 30 June 2017, accept the study place by 14 July by 3 pm (UTC/GMT +02.00).
  • If you are offered a study place after 30 June, accept the study place by the given date.

You can also confirm the study place in the My Studyinfo -service. In order to use the service, you will need a Finnish social security number and online banking credentials, mobile certificate or a Finnish electronic ID-card.

If you cannot confirm the study place electronically, you will be offered some other method for accepting the study place, for example a confirmation form. The confirmation of acceptance form has to reach the higher education institution by the given date. Please be sure to reserve several working days for this.

Confirming a study place electronically

If you have a Finnish social security number and online banking credentials, mobile certificate or a Finnish electronic ID-card, you can confirm the study place by logging in to the My Studyinfo -service.

    • Log in by clicking the “My Studyinfo” link on top of the Studyinfo.fi website.
    • Confirm the study place according to the service’s instructions.
    • Confirmation of the study place is binding and cannot be changed or cancelled later.

My Studyinfo-service view of accepting a study place

If you confirm your study place electronically, you will receive an automatic email notifying you that the study place has been confirmed.

Acceptance from the waiting list

Wait list situation view in the My Studyinfo service

The letter informing you about the admission results will also tell whether you are on the waiting list for any study places. You can also find this information from the My Studyinfo -service and see when your wait list status changes.

  • If you are accepted to a lower preference study place and are on a waiting list for one or more of your higher preferences, you can confirm the offered study place and choose to remain on a waiting list for higher preferences.
  • If you are accepted to a higher preference after this, the higher preference will automatically become your bindingly confirmed study place unless you are still on the waiting list for higher preferences.
  • If you confirm the study place for a lower preference and wish to wait for the results of your higher preferences, the confirmation will automatically become binding if you are not accepted to any higher preferences.
  • If you have confirmed a place and chosen to remain on the waiting list, but wish to cancel your place on the waiting list for your higher preferences, you can contact the higher education institution that you have applied to.  They will make the change for you, and the lower preference becomes your bindingly confirmed study place. Please note that this is only possible if you have not yet been accepted to any higher preferences, and you do not want to wait for the results any longer. If you have access to the My Studyinfo -service, you can make the change there yourself.

Register at the higher education institution

After you have confirmed the study place, you need to register as a student in the higher education institution by the given date. Other higher education institutions send the instructions and forms with the acceptance letter, others have separate instructions on how to register which can be found from the higher education institution’s own website. If the higher education institution does not send an acceptance letter, the return date of the necessary forms can also be found from the higher education institution’s own website.

Postponing your studies

You can register as non-attending for the academic year only for the following reasons:

  • If you are unable to begin your studies due to illness or disability and will be non-attending for one semester or the whole academic year.
  • If you are on maternity leave, paternity leave or parental leave
  • If you need to complete military service, civilian service or voluntary military service for women in Finland.

Questions on admissions and accepting a study place

If you have questions concerning the results of the joint application system of higher education institutions and/or accepting a study place, contact the university’s or UAS’s admission services. Higher education institutions are required to provide guidance and counselling for applicants.
