How to accept an offer of admission in joint application to higher education

Spring joint application | Autumn joint application

If you have been admitted to a study programme, you will receive a notification of this to your email. You must accept the offer of admission by the given deadline, or you will lose your offer. You can accept only one offer of admission per academic term. Accepting an offer of admission is a binding choice, and you cannot cancel or change your choice later. When you accept an offer of admission, all your other admission offers will be cancelled automatically. You cannot be accepted to other programmes starting in the same academic term after you have accepted an offer of admission.

Accept the offer of admission electronically

You can accept the offer of admission with the link in the email that you have received. If you have a Finnish social security number and Finnish online banking credentials (with e-identification enabled), mobile certificate or an electronic ID-card, you can accept the admission offer only by using the My Studyinfo -service.

When you accept the offer of admission electronically, you will receive an automatic email notifying you that the offer has been confirmed successfully.

If you cannot accept the offer of admission electronically, please contact the higher education institution. If you are sending a confirmation form by post, it must reach the higher education institution by the given deadline. Reserve several working days for this.

In addition to accepting the offer of admission, you need to register as a student at the higher education institution by the given deadline. If you do not register by the deadline, you will lose your study right.

One study place per academic term

Note that you may accept only one offer of admission to a study programme leading to a higher education degree in Finland in education that begins in the same academic term. This means that if you have been accepted to several study programmes in one application or in several applications, you need to choose which offer of admission you wish to accept. When you have accepted the offer, all other study programmes that you have applied to and that begin during the same academic term will be cancelled automatically. Additionally, you cannot be accepted to other study programmes starting in the same academic term after you have accepted an offer of admission.

Read more about the one study place per term provision.

Accepting an offer of admission in the spring joint application for English-taught study programmes

The higher education institutions will publish the admission results at different times (no later than by 4 June 2021). You can accept an offer of admission as soon as you have been admitted to a study programme, and you are sure that you wish to begin studies in that study programme.

If you are offered a study place you can:

a) accept the offer of admission and register as a student at the higher education institution

b) choose not to accept the offer of admission. If you have been placed on a waiting list for other application options, you may still be admitted to those if places become available.

NB! If you do not wish to accept an offer of admission, please inform the higher education institution of this as soon as possible so that your place can be offered to the next applicant on the waiting list.

You can be admitted to study programmes from the waiting list during the spring (until 2 August 2021 at 3 pm). Note that all study programmes do not admit applicants from waiting lists, for example if all admitted applicants choose to accept the offer of admission. You can follow your place and number on the waiting list via the link that you received in your email.

Remember that even if you get admitted to several study programmes in the spring joint application for English-taught study programmes, you can only accept one offer of admission. When you accept an offer of admission, all other study programmes that you have applied to will be cancelled automatically. You can also accept an offer of admission even if you do not know the results of all the study programmes you have applied to. In this case, if you accept an offer of admission, you can no longer be admitted to the other study programmes on your application.

Note that you cannot accept an offer of admission in one study programme and remain on a waiting list for other study programmes in the spring joint application for study programmes offered in English.

NB! If you have also applied for a study programme/programmes in the spring joint application for study programmes offered in Finnish/Swedish, read more detailed instructions on accept an offer of admission in Opintopolku.fi (in Finnish) or Studieinfo.fi (in Swedish).

Accepting an offer of admission and waiting lists in the autumn joint application

In the autumn joint application, you have placed your application options into order of preference. When all the results have been published, you can get admitted from a waiting list. Note that some study programmes do not admit applicants from waiting lists, for example if all admitted applicants choose to accept the offer of admission. You can follow your number on the waiting list via the link in the email.

If you are offered a study place to a lower preference study programme and are on a waiting list for one or more of your higher preferences, you can:

a) accept the offer of admission and choose to remain on a waiting list for your higher preferences. If you are accepted to a higher preference after this, the higher preference will automatically become your bindingly confirmed study place unless you are still on the waiting list for higher preferences. If you are not accepted to any of your higher preferences after this, the confirmation will automatically become binding for the lower preference study programme.

If you wish, you can cancel your place on the waiting list and bindingly confirm the lower preference. This is possible only if you have not yet been admitted from a waiting list to any of your higher preferences. You can change the status of the confirmation by using the email link.

b) accept the offer of admission from a lower preference study programme bindingly without choosing to remain on the waiting list for higher preferences. Note that if you do so, all your higher preferences will be cancelled.

c) choose not to accept the offer of admission but remain on the waiting list for higher preferences.

Register at the higher education institution

After you have accepted the offer of admission, you need to register as a student in the higher education institution by the given deadline. Some higher education institutions send the instructions on how to register with the acceptance letter, and others have separate instructions on how to register which can be found from the higher education institution’s own website.

Postponing your studies

You can register as non-attending for the academic year only for the following reasons:

  • If you are unable to begin your studies due to illness or disability and will be non-attending for one semester or the whole academic year.
  • If you are on maternity leave, paternity leave or parental leave
  • If you need to complete military service, civilian service or voluntary military service for women in Finland.
