How to confirm a study place in joint application to higher education
If you have been admitted to a study programme, you will receive a notification of this to your email. You must confirm the study place by the given deadline, or you will lose your place. You can confirm only one study place per academic term. Confirming a study place is a binding choice, and you cannot cancel or change your choice later. When you confirm a study place bindingly, all your other study programmes will automatically be cancelled.
Confirm the study place electronically
You can confirm an offered study place with the link in the email that you have received. If you have a Finnish social security number and Finnish online banking credentials (with e-identification enabled), mobile certificate or an electronic ID-card, you can confirm the offered study place in the My Studyinfo -service.
When you confirm your study place electronically, you will receive an automatic email notifying you that the study place has been confirmed successfully.
If you cannot confirm the study place electronically, please contact the higher education institution. If you are sending a confirmation form by post, it must reach the higher education institution by the given deadline. Reserve several working days for this.
In addition to confirming the study place, you need to register as a student at the higher education institution by the given deadline. If you do not register by the deadline, you will lose your study right.
One study place per academic term
Note that you can only confirm one study place per academic term. This means that if you have been accepted to several study programmes in one application or in several applications, you need to choose which place you wish to confirm. When you have confirmed a study place, all other study programmes that you have applied to and that begin during the same academic term will be cancelled automatically.
The higher education institutions will publish the admission results at different times (no later than by 5 June 2020). You can confirm the study place as soon as you have been admitted to a study programme, and you are sure that you wish to begin studies in that study programme.
If you are offered a study place you can:
a) confirm the study place and register as a student at the higher education institution
b) choose not to confirm the offered study place. If you have been placed on a waiting list for other application options, you may still be admitted to those if places become available.
NB! If you do not wish to accept an offer of admission, please inform the higher education institution of this as soon as possible so that your place can be offered to the next applicant on the waiting list.
You can be admitted to study programmes from the waiting list during the spring (until 31 July 2020 at 3 pm). Note that all study programmes do not admit applicants from waiting lists, for example if all admitted applicants choose to accept the offer of admission. You can follow your place and number on the waiting list via the link that you received in your email.
Remember that even if you get admitted to several study programmes in the spring joint application for English-taught study programmes, you can only confirm one study place. When you confirm an offer of admission, all other study programmes that you have applied to will be cancelled automatically. You can also confirm a study place even if you do not know the results of all the study programmes you have applied to. In this case, you can lo longer be admitted to the other study programmes on your application.
Note that you cannot accept a study place and remain on a waiting list for other study programmes in the spring joint application for study programmes offered in English.
NB! If you have also applied for a study programme/programmes in the spring joint application for study programmes offered in Finnish/Swedish, read more detailed instructions on confirming a study place in Opintopolku.fi (in Finnish) or Studieinfo.fi (in Swedish).
In the autumn joint application, you have placed your application options into order of preference. When all the results have been published, you can get admitted from a waiting list. Note that some study programmes do not admit applicants from waiting lists, for example if all admitted applicants choose to accept the offer of admission. You can follow your number on the waiting list via the link in the email.
If you are offered a study place to a lower preference study programme and are on a waiting list for one or more of your higher preferences, you can:
a) confirm the offered study place and choose to remain on a waiting list for your higher preferences. If you are accepted to a higher preference after this, the higher preference will automatically become your bindingly confirmed study place unless you are still on the waiting list for higher preferences. If you are not accepted to any of your higher preferences after this, the confirmation will automatically become binding for the lower preference study programme.
If you wish, you can cancel your place on the waiting list and bindingly confirm the lower preference. This is possible only if you have not yet been admitted from a waiting list to any of your higher preferences. You can change the status of the confirmation by using the email link.
b) confirm the lower preference study place bindingly without choosing to remain on the waiting list for higher preferences. Note that if you do so, all your higher preferences will be cancelled.
c) choose not to accept the offer of admission but remain on the waiting list for higher preferences.
Register at the higher education institution
After you have confirmed the study place, you need to register as a student in the higher education institution by the given deadline. Some higher education institutions send the instructions on how to register with the acceptance letter, and others have separate instructions on how to register which can be found from the higher education institution’s own website.
Postponing your studies
You can register as non-attending for the academic year only for the following reasons:
- If you are unable to begin your studies due to illness or disability and will be non-attending for one semester or the whole academic year.
- If you are on maternity leave, paternity leave or parental leave
- If you need to complete military service, civilian service or voluntary military service for women in Finland.
Questions on admissions and accepting a study place
If you have questions concerning the results of the joint application system of higher education institutions and/or accepting a study place, contact the university’s or UAS’s admission services. Higher education institutions are required to provide guidance and counselling for applicants.
