Quota for first-time applicants

From 2016 onwards the higher education institutions have to reserve some of the study places for those applicants who do not hold a higher education qualification or a higher education study place in Finland. Applicants who have accepted a study place in a degree programme in a university of applied sciences or university in Finland that started in autumn 2014 or after (also concerns transfer student applications) will not be considered as first-time applicants.

The size of the quota for first-time applicants varies depending on the study option. The quota is a way to ensure that as many applicants as possible will get a study place.

However, you can apply and accept a study place in your field of preference. If you want to change your field of study later on, you can find different application possibilities.

Study places not reserved for first time applicants will be allocated based on admission results and usually admission criteria is the same for both first-time applicants and other applicants. Please check the admission criteria for each degree programme.

Please note that degree programmes provided in English do not have to use quotas for first-time applicants.
