The field offers interesting job opportunities for both men and women. It suits people who like creative solutions. Technology solves issues to facilitate human life, which makes it highly valuable work.

Engineering graduates may work in production, design, development, expert and managerial assignments. Their competencies are also required when selling and marketing machinery, production systems or construction projects. Neither should we overlook engineering graduates working as trainers or in purchasing or business administration. Diverse competencies are an advantage in this field.

Future challenges include issues such as the need for sustainable development, mitigation of climate change and environmental burdens, development of health care and increasing the ageing population’s well-being.

Co-operation between different fields and making use of international opportunities are part of the everyday lives of graduates in Engineering, Laboratory Services and Construction Management alike. During your studies, you can focus your competencies in different ways.

The degree titles of graduates from the Degree Programmes in Engineering are:

  • Bachelor of Engineering (insinööri AMK), 240 ECTS credits, duration 4 years
  • Bachelor of Laboratory Services (laboratorioanalyytikko AMK), 210 ECTS credits, duration 3.5 years
  • Bachelor of Construction Management (rakennusmestari AMK), 210 ECTS credits, duration 3.5 years.

Energy and Environmental Technology

Climate change, environmental problems and increasing demand for energy are among the greatest challenges of our time. Energy efficiency and generation of energy based on renewable sources are answers to these issues. At the same time, it is important to understand the environmental impacts of industrial activities and remove and prevent any negative effects on the environment that may emerge. Education in Energy and Environmental Technology prepares graduates with multidisciplinary competences as experts in energy solutions as well as professionals in control and protection of a clean and safe environment.

Mechanical and Manufacturing Technology

The assignments of mechanical and manufacturing engineers may focus on a wide variety of areas. They may be related to product development and design of various items of machinery and equipment, for example. Assignments relating to production, manufacturing methods or areas such as distributions and partnerships are possible. A mechanical engineer may equally work as a team member or as a leader. As many businesses within the sector operate worldwide, there are also good opportunities to find international assignments. Mechanical engineers may advance all the way to corporate management level in their careers and their further education opportunities are also excellent.

Process and Materials Engineering

Process and Materials Engineering is based on chemical, physical and biological phenomena as well as practical applications of natural sciences. The processing industry processes raw materials into products in multi-phase overall processes relating to pre-treatment, actual processing and after-treatments. Process and Materials Engineering focuses on knowledge of raw materials and products, machinery and equipment technology, automation technology and materials technology, taking energy, economic, environmental, safety and production responsibility considerations into account.

Competence in this field is future competence, covering clean water, medicines, foods, cosmetics, fuels, chemicals, paints, plastics and sustainable materials, such as fibre-based packaging and paper products.

Construction Engineering

The construction sector is a versatile employer and there are plenty of challenging job assignments available for construction engineers in different areas of construction. Construction engineers are responsible for planning and management of construction projects. Education prepares students for design, construction and maintenance of buildings, bridges, roads, streets, and environmental and civil engineering structures. New challenges include solutions relating to renovation and environmental construction, maintenance, safety and security.

Construction engineers are responsible for ensuring that planning and construction work results in a high-quality construction project completed on schedule, taking sustainable development and technical and economic considerations into account. Building services are related to the supply of air, water, heat, light and information in built-up environments.

Electrical and Automation Engineering

Electrical and automation technologies surround us everywhere. These fields are also necessary in all branches of industry. The significance of electrical engineering is increasing continuously with the development of new forms of energy generation and application as well as environmentally friendly solutions for different areas of life. Automation is used in control and monitoring of energy management and production lines.

Industrial Management

Industrial Management studies form a diverse combination of technology and business, management and international activities. The studies are made up of extensive modules focusing on core business processes, such as customer, product, order-delivery and management processes. As part of the studies, students explore development and technology of production systems, integrated product development, sales and marketing as well as project and people management in international operating environments. Industrial Management studies are also ideally suited as a specialisation area for all other engineering fields to provide broad technical and economic competences required for management of organisations.

What do the engineering studies comprise?

The core studies create a foundation for technical professional studies and for professional specialisation. They focus on mathematics, physics and chemistry as well as language studies. Professional studies consist of theoretical studies, practical assignments and practical laboratory studies. Course contents relevant to the world of work and co-operation with businesses in projects, for example, facilitate the transition to working life after graduation.

The programme includes a 30-credit supervised work placement, which may also be completed abroad.

As part of the Bachelor’s thesis, students consolidate their competence in their specialisation area and demonstrate their ability to apply the knowledge and skills that they have acquired at work. In most cases, Bachelor’s theses are commissioned by businesses or other organisations.

International activities form an essential part of the Technology, Communications and Transport field and students have the opportunity to complete part of their studies through international student exchanges at foreign partner higher education institutions.

Studies in Technology, Communications and Transport include plenty of mathematics and physics relating to the field, because natural sciences form the foundation for technological competence and they are applied to different fields of technology. A genuine interest in mathematical and scientific subjects provides a good basis for UAS studies. In exchange for challenging studies, students will gain a highly esteemed profession that will also offer plenty of work in the future.

Master’s degrees

After completing a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, it is possible to take a UAS Master’s degree with a scope of 60 ECTS credits. A further requirement for eligibility to apply is at least three years of work experience acquired after completion of the UAS Bachelor’s degree. The degree titles of graduates from these degree programmes is Master of Engineering (insinööri, ylempi AMK). The degree title of those graduating from English-language Degree Programmes in Engineering is the Master of Engineering (MEng) title.
