Services in universities
Those studying Military Science explore national defence, security policy and leadership. The field is characterised by continuous preparation against crises and security threats. The field also involves following changes to and technological developments in security and defence policy environments.
Those admitted to the National Defence College commit themselves to working in the Finnish Defence Forces or the Finnish Border Guard for a period equivalent to the duration of their studies.
Officers of the Finnish Defence Forces work in management, planning assignments, international operations, operational readiness and maintenance duties. Assignments are available in the Army, Navy or Air Force both in Finland and abroad.
Work assignments vary by branch, but training duties are common, especially in the early years of the career. An integral part of an officer’s career involves further and continuing training, which makes it possible to advance to more demanding expert, planning and managerial duties, among others.
University education in Military Science is provided by the National Defence College.

The key tasks in the field of Sport Sciences include education and research relating to sports and exercise culture and their development for the needs of different areas of society. Areas of interest include the relationship between physical exercise and health as well as its contributing factors from the perspectives of social sciences, behavioural sciences and medicine.
Degree-holders’ jobs include:
- teaching assignments at educational institutions
- sports organisations
- managerial positions within municipal and state sports administration
- planning and managerial assignments in leisure activities, rehabilitation, testing and tourism.
The only place to study Sports Sciences in Finland is the University of Jyväskylä.
