Finnish as a second language at comprehensive school and general upper secondary school

You can study Finnish as a second language in basic education, upper secondary education and vocational education if

  • Finnish is not your mother tongue and
  • your language skills are lacking.

In this case the name of the subject is Finnish as a second language and literature which is one of the mother tongue and literature subject’s syllabus. You can study only according to this syllabus or also take part in the Finnish language and literature syllabus classes.

You can also study Finnish as a second language in vocational basic education. Finnish as a second language can replace parts or the complete syllabus of Finnish as mother tongue.

Studying Finnish is not limited only to language classes but studying all subjects supports it.
