Universities of applied sciences and universities charge a tuition fee from Bachelor’s or Master’s level students studying in languages other than Finnish or Swedish.

What can I study?

After basic education

After finishing basic education, you can study at a general upper secondary school or at a vocational institution. You apply to upper secondary education for young people and vocational education with basic education certificate.

Preparatory education for upper secondary vocational education and training –  VALMA

Immigrants who require preparedness for vocational education can apply for preparatory education for vocational basic education. Application time is 24.5.-26.7.2016.

University of applied sciences (UAS) or university

You can apply to a UAS once you have completed a vocational qualification or the general upper secondary school syllabus, and to a university when you have completed a vocational qualification or the general upper secondary school syllabus and the matriculation examination.

Adults

As an adult, you can apply to participate in various courses intended for immigrants via Employment and Economic Development Centres. Read more on the TE-service’s website.

You can also apply to vocational or upper secondary education as well as to a UAS or university. Polytechnics/UAS and universities also provide open education and continuing education. In folk high schools and study centres you can, for example, supplement your basic studies and take part in different types of preparatory courses. In summer universities you can do academic and other studies.

Some studies are also provided in English. Most institutions also have courses designed especially for immigrants.

If you have completed a degree in your home country

If you have completed a degree and/or an education in your home country which would allow you to apply to a higher education institution, you can apply to a Finnish polytechnic/UAS or university with that degree.

Other study possibilities for adult students

There are several learning centres for adults in Finland where you can study in programmes leading to a degree, or as a hobby. For example folk high schools and adult education centres offer the possibility to study, for example, languages, music, handicrafts, sports in almost every municipality.

In folk high schools and study centres you can also supplement your basic studies and take part in different types of preparatory courses.

In summer universities you can do academic and other studies. Summer universities have teaching in several cities.

Most institutions also have courses especially designed for immigrants.
