Student financial aid for foreigners

If you study in Finland but are not a Finnish citizen, you can receive student financial aid if

  • you have been registered in the Population Information System as a permanent resident of Finland, and
  • The reason for your residence in Finland is other than studies (such as working, family ties or remigration).

Applying for student financial aid

You can apply for student financial aid in the same way as other students. Submit your application to the Social Insurance Institution of Finland (Kela) or the educational institution. If you have not received student financial aid in Finland before, enclose to your application the appendix for foreigners available from the educational institution or Kela.

The Kela website provides detailed instructions for an application for student financial aid.
